Chief Ketchum
Chief Ketchum lived on the west side of the city in
Galveston with his wife and eight children in a two story Colonial house built in
1838 by the founder of Galveston. Chief Ketchum bought the house in 1800. After
twenty years Ketchum became chief of Galveston’s police department. Chief
Ketchum put his son in charge of his general contracting business. Chief Ketchum
was a tall and slender he was also a very popular chief despite the fact that
he fought in the Civil War as a drummer boy. Later on he became a Captain for
the Union. Even though Galveston was highly known for being Confederate they
respected Chief Ketchum. Sometimes groups of people would like to have regions
at Ketchum’s coffee urn.
